| Francis J. Smith Memorial Sportsmanship Award This sportsmanship award is a tribute to Francis J. Smith and his efforts to foster respect and sportsmanship in this community. Francis J. Smith spent several years supporting the local youth throughout this community as a teacher, a volunteer, a father, and a baseball coach in and member of the Lake Region Youth Baseball Association. His dedicated coaching efforts helped many children improve as baseball players and his committed vision for mutual respect impacted many players, coaches, officials and fans alike. Throughout his several years coaching Cal Ripken baseball, Frank focused on the fundamentals of baseball while demanding that the players maintain a high level of respect and sportsmanship for themselves, each other, and all those associated with the game. Lake Region Youth Baseball Association understands the importance of sportsmanship and appreciates his efforts. May Frank’s commitment and vision be remembered and continued by any associated with athletics throughout this community. The Francis Smith Sportsmanship Award was presented for the first time on June 9, 2011 at the Lake Region Union High School annual spring sports banquet. Francis "Frank" Smith, a teacher at Lake Region and local youth baseball coach, passed away in November, 2010, and the "Frank Smith Memorial Fund" was created for the Lake Region Youth Baseball League in his memory. Part of this Memorial has been set up to annually celebrate a softball player and a baseball player at Lake Region Union High School who have each displayed outstanding sportsmanship. The 2011 winners are Danika Gallup and Tyler Jacobs. Congratulations on your accomplishments, Danika and Tyler!
